In Seth Godin’s book, Idea Virus, he states this about a marketing strategy for small business (or any business);
“We live in a world where consumers actively resist marketing. So, it is imperative to stop marketing at people. The idea is to create an environment where consumers will market to each other.”
I couldn’t agree more. Here’s a quick brainstorm on strengthening personal marketing in your organization. Always easier said then done but the theme here is to be customer centered and always moving forward.
4 Simple Step Marketing Strategy for Small Business
Step 1: Have a great organization. Be trustworthy. Offer great products and/or services. Be unique – have an identity you can be proud of and that customers/clients/members can be proud to be associated with. Have a story worth spreading. Simple, right?
Step 2: Give people the means to spread your story. Make sure your website and ideas are easily bookmarked and shared. Make fun, informative videos if appropriate. Write articles and press releases if appropriate. But, don’t forget inexpensive, high exposure off-line marketing as well, including giving people well-designed promotional stickers and tools to help spread the word and start conversations.
Step 3: Encourage people to spread the word… the uniqueness… the logo/slogan/identity of your organization. Don’t just put together a Facebook page or have free stickers available at your shop and leave it at that – Offer incentives, have contests, make it worth their while to be part of the conversation and one of the ‘people in the know’. Yes, your greatness should suffice in having people want to be associated with you and recommend you to their friends and the world, but most people need a little push.
Step 4: Keep moving forward. Keep innovating. Keep working on your unique story, telling your story and building your “fan” base. Fine tune what works, eliminate what doesn’t. Enjoy yourself. Keep reading and listening and learning. Make your business meaningful.
“Success” will surely follow.
