I’ve been asked a few times by family and colleagues, “How does Ned and spreading Ned Stickers help your company, Websticker?” They wonder why we put so much effort and resources into something that doesn’t appear to make us any money. It’s not a bad question, and perhaps a reminder to look at why companies are much more than their products and bottom line.
Any successful company is creating a brand identity and a reputation built around or outside of their core product or service. It is not just about profits, it is about employee happiness, helping others succeed, and establishing a unique identity that creates profits over the long run.
In regard to Websticker’s company branding, one could also ask how our Sticker Mobile helps us? Or, giving away custom stickers to non-profits; Or, buying employees ski passes; Or posting pictures on Instagram or Facebook; Or, putting fun free stickers in our shipping boxes and invoices; Or, putting in a couple thousand hours of free design work each year; Or, writing a blog post or a book about marketing with stickers. Creating brand identity doesn’t directly profit us but it does differentiate us, build trust, add meaning to our work, and in the long run allow our company to grow and succeed.
We need to make money to keep doing what we are doing. And, to make money, we need to first be trusted due to our expertise, our reputation, our willingness to help other organizations grow and get their message/identity out, and profit. Every company must find their differentiating identity in order to stand out and find success over time.
