When is it appropriate to order magnets instead of stickers for promotional reasons? Due to higher prices and more limited display options, my answer would be “not often”. But, whether an outdoor car magnet or an indoor fridge magnet, there are times when promotional magnets are an excellent promotional option.
Car door magnets are appropriate when that signage needs to be temporary, moved, or reused. Perhaps a vehicle is only used part time for business reasons and the rest of the time needs (or owner wants) it to look clean. Perhaps magnets are moved to different vehicles occasionally or put on a rental car. But if vehicle is mainly used for business, more powerful and professional looking graphics using stickers, vinyl decals and wraps are always a better option.
As far as smaller promotional magnets for vehicles I think a custom sticker or decal is always a better option. Why pay more to have a medium that isn’t displayed as long on cars and can’t find it’s way onto other surfaces like windows, snowboards, water bottles, laptops, etc? I discussed this a bit in regard to custom static stickers in an earlier blog post – with the availability of removable adhesives it doesn’t make economic sense to use a promotional product which costs more and has less visibility.
Indoor, custom fridge magnets are another story. refrigerator magnets make sense for businesses or people that want to be… on the fridge. Direct reminders or contact info for people that need it. Save The Date Magnets for weddings and special events, pizza or food delivery services, diet or nutrition information or resources, magnet photo frames, emergency phone numbers, sports schedules and calendar magnets… these all make sense to keep in front of people when they are in their kitchen (often the hub of the house).
But, for many businesses it may not be appropriate to try and claim space on a customers fridge door. Most businesses want to start conversations and attract brand exposure beyond individuals kitchens. For many businesses money will simply be wasted as promotional magnets won’t be useful or entertaining and therefore probably won’t be displayed at all.
As with all promotional products, one size/product does not fit all. The key is utilizing a product that is useful and desirable to your target market so they are most likely to display where others can see your message and brand. Promotional magnets have their place for certain vehicle situations or businesses targeting people directly in a kitchen setting but for the majority of businesses there are better custom sticker options worth considering to maximize visibility and impressions.
Stickers are so much more popular with the younger generation than magnets. And from what your blog describes a lot more versatile!
