We don’t have a lot of information about custom static cling stickers on our website, however interest and popularity in window clings for cars seems to be increasing and new static cling decals printing capabilities have been added in our factory.
I’ve written in the past that I don’t think static cling stickers are the most effective option for cars (I’ve shared my opinion below). Tinted windows, shorter life spans, and weak visibility are just a few issues with car static stickers. But, custom static cling stickers can be very effective for Point Of Purchase (POP) displays and temporary window signage. Are custom static cling stickers the best product for your needs?
Static Stickers Tip #1: If you are trying to maximize exposure over an extended period of time chances are there are less costly and better suited options than custom static cling stickers. White Vinyl and Clear Polyester are available with varying degrees of adhesive and can help avoid some of the problems associated with car static stickers.
Static Stickers Tip #2: All static cling decals & stickers are not created equal. There are varying shelf lives for static cling material. One factory we know uses a material that holds it’s static charge for six months while still on the backing paper – another factory has a two year shelf life on the static cling material. This is obviously important if static window clings for cars are being sold as product or distributed over a period of time. You could buy a one-year supply of static cling stickers for a college bookstore, and 7 months later you may be selling a product that no longer “clings” properly. Make sure you ask about the shelf life when purchasing custom static cling decals and don’t buy a multi-year supply.
Static Stickers Tip #3: There are some essential things to keep in mind when designing static window clings for cars. Needing static on the face of the sticker requires that cling decals be custom printed in reverse on a clear static material. This brings up the need to be very cognizant when designing static decals of how they will present while on the backing paper (backwards) and what inks and colors will allow the image to be seen (not translucent) once applied to a window.
These custom static stickers printing tips may sound straightforward and obvious, but an amazing number of organizations still remain unaware of the prevalence of tinted windows, the need for white ink on clear material, and the availability of removable vinyl adhesives that can eliminate the need and risks associated with custom static cling decals. I recently wrote about a static college sticker I received that made every mistake and was still being handed out to students and parents… not increasing visibility and pride, but damaging their brand.

My Opinion On Window Clings For Cars
I’m not a big fan of static cling stickers and window clings for cars. Static vinyl is usually not the right promotional choice for a company, school or organization looking for free exposure or a branded stickers to sell.
Yes, white or clear vinyl with static cling on the back is great for temporary advertising and information when adhesives could mar product. Static cling material works well for computer screens, televisions, appliances, cooler doors – any smooth surfaced product where point of purchase promotions or product features can be communicated (and removed) easily.
But for clear stickers on car windows, whether you are a school, a business, a non-profit or anyone, just say “NO” to window static cling stickers and static cling decals. Here’s why:
• Static stickers & static decals must be printed on clear vinyl material and have the static on the face. The only location that these can be applied is on the inside of a window. If they were applied to the outside of a window they will fly off. Inside application of car static stickers severely limits the possible applications (and promotional exposure) of the custom stickers. They can’t be put on cargo boxes, skateboards, laptops, bumpers, notebooks, water bottles… nowhere but windows.
• They cost more than white vinyl with removable adhesive and also usually require an added color (white) to cut down on translucence and weaker visibility. Many car windows are tinted and therefore static cling stickers can be difficult (sometimes impossible) to see. And, as mentioned above, static cling stickers do not have as long a shelf life as stickers with removable adhesive.
A question I often ask businesses thinking about custom static cling stickers for cars is;
“if you are trying to maximize exposure, why make your stickers more difficult to put on, more difficult for the public to see, and easier to remove?”
