The heat will soften the adhesive and will be the best bet for peeling the sticker off in one piece.

Just put a detergent like the ones they use for car wash. It works on removing the car stickers all the time. It takes time though.
I committed an innocent parking violation at a ski area and the mountain security put a nasty permanent adhesive paper label on my window. Paper labels are definitely not meant for cars- see this blog for an explanation: http://customstickers.blogspot.com/2010/01/what-is-difference-between-sticker-and.html. I was still able to remove it safely and without a problem using the method listed above.
I love to put stickers on my car – only a few at a time and I change them up periodically. I have no fear of it because I learned from you guys the tips: 1. use a hairdryer to soften it before removing. 2. if any gum residue is left it will come off without damaging the car or paint with a little Pine Sol – just like I have to use to remove pine pitch off the car.
