Promotional stickers get little respect or attention in business and marketing books. Out of the last 20-25 marketing related books I’ve read stickers have only gotten a passing mention in one or two of them. So, imagine my excitement when the other day I was flipping through Scott Ginsberg’s book, Get Them To Come To You, and in giant, bold print it stated, “It’s all about the sticker.” His name tag ideas got me thinking about all promotional stickers.
Of course, Scott Ginsberg is “that guy with the name tag” and has built his entire career off of wearing a name tag 24/7. And, of course, a name tag is a type of sticker. So, it really shouldn’t be surprising that name tags ideas and stickers should be mentioned in many (or all) of his books. Especially one where part of the Title is; Stick Yourself Out There (which is why I bought a copy). But, beyond great name tag ideas, Scott is also an expert in “approachability” which brings us back to how he leveraged a simple sticker into a successful career. A name tag makes you more approachable – it lowers defenses and tells the world; “Hello, my name is So-And-So and I’m open to conversations, I’m sticking myself out there.”
The invitation and approachability of someone with a name tag is a microcosm of what all promotional stickers can do for a cause, brand, or business. Stickers can make a person, product or brand more approachable, or, as Scott talks about in his book, more “enshrined.” Stickers (labels) on books or products touting awards or sales numbers add credibility, leverage the media, and improve the perceptions of the product. They help “enshrine” the product. In a similar way, fans of a band, cause, team, church, brand, etc. with promotional stickers on their car or laptop are offering an unsolicited testimonial of support and help enshrine the product, message or organization being stuck out there.
Enshrining your business is about adding credibility. This doesn’t necessarily mean wearing a name tag 24/7 any more than it’s about covering the world with bumper stickers. It doesn’t necessarily require stickers at all. It’s about touting your unique identity, adding credibility, starting conversations, making impressions and building trust. It just so happens that promotional stickers and labels are one of the least costly and convenient tools to help accomplish those goals.
